Coffey shows strong in 2nd outing of the year.
Linwood, NY – October 10, 2009
Billy Coffey made his return to Paradise Speedway for his second outing of the year in his 600cc Micro Sprint.
Coffey started the evening off by finishing second in his heat race in exciting fashion, battling the leader side by side for two full laps coming up short by a mere five feet.
Billy and his crew chief Butch watched the track debating on what changes to make to the car. With the current track condition and what the temperature was doing they decided to loosen the car up a bit. Because of Coffey’s strong heat race finish, he would line up in the third starting position for the feature.
On the start Coffey charged into the first turn and was a bit on the tight side that resulted in him loosing a position. Coffey was making adjustments on the car trying to remove the push he was experiencing which took him a couple laps to straighten out. Once Coffey got the handling straightened out he had his work cut out to catch back up. He started to reel the third and fourth place cars in and once he caught them it was a constant battle between the three as they swapped positions for five straight laps. Coffey would come out the victor of the three way battle and would set his sights on the top two cars. Because of the battle the leaders had checked out to almost a full straight lead over Coffey and he really needed a caution if he wanted any chance at the win. With two laps to go Coffey would get what he was hoping for, the yellow lights came on stacking up the field. On the restart Coffey drove to the bottom and found the track was slicked off and pretty much had to play follow the leader to the checkers coming home in the third position.
“Overall it was a great night. I struggled a little with the car at the beginning of the race and I think I probably should have went to the top on the restart but oh well. I am just glad to be strapping in a race car again.” stated Coffey.
